RetroMarques is pleased to offer for sale this 1972 Lotus Europa Twin-cam 57KWP...

Coming from long-term (20 years) ownership is 57KWP, a 1972 Lotus Europa Twin-cam. Understood to have had just 2 previous owners, and originally registered as ‘XRA757L’ (presently on a private plate which is to be retained by the seller), this Europa was first registered on 10 August 1972 and presents an opportunity to acquire a rare twin-cam Europa, with only 50 or so on the roads at present. We understand that this car was ordered from Lotus and then built at the local Lotus dealer, as it was possible to specify in the day and is not therefore a ‘home-built’ car! Several original items remain on the car, the period Wolfrace alloys, Lotus steering wheel, 8-track stereo and so on!

A genuine Lotus Twin-cam engined Europa which superseded the Renault engine variant (which offered only 1470cc and 78bhp!) providing a significant performance improvement to 107bhp from 1558cc, indeed 37% more power and 46% more torque, to give the owner a very quick for the day 0-60mph time of 7 sec! Along with the big power change, came the body change to the rear side ‘sails’ thus improving the rearward visibility and – many would say – also the looks of the Europa overall and also the new nose spoiler for improved straight line stability.

  • Chassis No: 72071690P
  • Engine No: V27031
  • Twin Dellorto 40/45s
  • Mileage: 87350 (believed correct)

On behalf of the present owner, we have carried out an extensive programme of mechanical recommissioning, including work carried out to the carbs, exhaust, fuel system, brakes, gear linkage, lights, trim and more. All-told, some £5000 of work! With the recommissioning complete, she starts easily, settling into a lovely throaty twin-cam idle. The gearchange is easy to master on this car (unusually positive for the Europa given the length and complexity of the linkage!) and she pulls away smoothly. Strong on the road, the torque very evident, with nice direct, quite light steering and strong even brakes. Overall a very sporty yet perhaps surprisingly comfortable drive!

Painted in the infamous Lotus Yellow and with the very period black pinstripes, this is a car to enjoy as-is or to improve. The GRP body appears to be in good, solid crack-free condition but the paintwork is showing its age; that said, we very much like the genuine 70s look of this now quite rarely seen Europa but others may wish for a better quality of presentation – it will be very much personal choice!

Freshly recommissioned and MoT tested, this Europa is ready to go and surely presents a very affordable opportunity to purchase a rare, low-owner and highly original Lotus Europa Twin cam.
