RetroMarques Ltd is pleased to offer for sale on behalf of the owner: ‘WPV 998A’, Austin-Healey 3000 MkII (BJ7) Convertible...

An opportunity to acquire a very smart, restored BJ7 which is looking stunning in the rare Reno Red paintwork and contrasting navy blue interior. The extensive history file documents the restoration very well and details full body-off strip, repair and professional respray, engine, gearbox and overdrive rebuilds and much other work. The bulk of the work was carried out a few years ago and ‘WPV’ has now been completed with new interior and boot trim kits and other detailed finishing work including the sourcing of rare original parts. She has been fully serviced, has a new MoT test and is ready for the next owner.

Build details (per Heritage Certificate):

  • Chassis No: H-BJ7-L/25068
  • Eng No: 29F-RU-H/5918
  • Build: 5-6 September 1963
  • MoT Test: 31 March 2020
  • Mileage: 355 (originally 76,441)

‘WPV’ was imported back into the UK in 2005 and in 2008 a full bare chassis restoration commenced which included a dip-strip and then also electrophoretic coating for anti-corrosion protection. The body was repaired/rebuilt with many new panel parts (mostly Kilmartin) and at this point was converted from left to right hand drive. Coltec rebuilt the engine which included a lead-free cylinder head conversion and porting. Invoicing then shows many new or rebuilt parts being added to the car and also a number of upgrades, such as new springs and poly-bushing. In 2011 the Healey was MoT tested and roadworthy, although at that point still being finished. Since the major work was carried out she has accrued very few miles, circa 350 to date. Earlier this year, the Healey was purchased from the previous owner/restorer and has now been completed following a £10k programme of work.

De-bumpered and sitting very well on the expensive 180-section Michelin XAS tyres, ‘WPV’ looks very sporting and purposeful. The engine bay is neat and tidy, the interior and boot are both freshly trimmed and the hood is as-new. ‘WPV’ starts easily and pulls away with a lovely exhaust note (an additional (BJ8) rear silencer is fitted), the engine feeling strong, eager to rev and with plenty of torque – just as a Healey should be! The gearbox and overdrive are positive and slick, the steering is nicely responsive and the servo’d brakes (discs on the front) pull her up positively and straight. Overall a very nice Big Healey driving experience, the car feeling reassuringly ‘strong’ and very ‘together’.

The later convertible Big Healeys offer somewhat more refined motoring with the wind-up windows and proper hood yet also retaining much of the 50s shape and sporting lines of the original Healey. The BJ7 is generally a little more affordable than the end-of-line BJ8 yet offers many of the benefits; ‘WPV’ is a Big Healey to enjoy and a car ideally suited to touring.
