RetroMarques Ltd is pleased to offer for sale on behalf of the owner, the ex-Works demonstrator Austin-Healey 3000 MkII ‘699 DON ’...

A rare opportunity to acquire ‘699 DON’, known in Healey circles as ‘Red DON’ (there was a ‘Blue DON’!) and only now being offered for sale on behalf of the late Allan Cameron, in whose custody the car has been for nigh-on 25 years.

Build details:

  • Chassis No: HBT7/14222
  • Engine: 29E-RU-H/472
  • Colour: Colorado Red/BlackTrim
  • Built: 15 May – 15 June 1961
  • Despatched: 19 June 1961
  • Destination: Publicity Department, The Austin Motor Company Limited, Longbridge, Birmingham

DON is/was widely publicised as participating in the Alpine Rally/Coupe des Alpes in June 1961, not it is understood as a full-blown Works entry, but rather on loan to journalist/photographer Joe Lowrey as a ‘road test’ car! The rally was won of course by the Morley brothers in a similar car. In period, the factory Austin-Healey advertising featured this car and a good number of the original magazines, The Autocar, The Motor et al, remain in the history file showing those original adverts. Google or search Youtube and ‘699 DON’ can be seen in period footage e.g. driving down the slip-road onto the new M1 motorway!

In January 1963, ‘699 DON’ was sold on by Austin and eventually purchased by Allan in August of 1992. Allan returned this rare tri-carb Healey to original spec and then also competed in it as follows (sample only):

  • Coys Historic Festival July 95
  • Le Mans 96
  • Healey Driver International 97 (2 class wins at Brands Hatch and Zolder)
  • ‘Classic’ Prescott 97 – first ever sub-55sec climb in a Big Healey!

In 2011, Allan took DON back to the commemorative edition of the Alpine Rally and the car is now as it ran then in fast road/rally spec with the original factory black hardtop, cockpit rally equipment, harnesses and roll cage all in place. The engine is in correct tri-carb spec and tuned for fast road work, indeed fresh from a carb rebuild, rolling road setup and gearbox overhaul. A FIVA card is on file.

Available for the first time in 24 years, ‘699 DON’ is a rare, desirable and historic Big Healey. The tri-carb MkII Healeys are a rare version of the Healey 3000 in any case, but to acquire the Austin Motor Company demonstrator is surely a real opportunity. ‘Red DON’ is ready to be enjoyed, no matter whether on road or competition work, and will grace any collection.
